True style cannot be rushed. In home decor, it takes time to develop that lived in and loved look, but you also need time to see what’s needed and where. Slowly you’ll notice nooks and crannies that need TLC, and once these are complete, it changes the entire space for the better.

However, in our instant gratification society, we’ve become conditioned to want it all right away.

Here are some tried and true design tricks to inject some personal style into your home.

Accessorize Windows

Just like that favorite little black dress doesn’t need that statement necklace, windows may not require custom window treatments. But adding them can take a plain Jane, boring look over the top by adding instant style and elegance. Opt for a textured fabric to add a layer of tactile design into the room. Or, to make a room with a low ceiling feel a bit loftier, hang the window treatments just below the ceiling to create the illusion of a higher ceiling. Between Roman shades, drapes, curtains, pleated shades and blinds, there is bound to be an option that suits your style.

Style Your Bookshelves

You’ve pinned a ton of photos on Pinterest of drool-worthy bookshelves, but the ones behind your computer screen are still lackluster. Inject some instant style by creating a bold backdrop. Customize the back panel of the shelves with a colorful coat of paint or add luxe fabric to it.

Curate your book collection down to visually pleasing colors, shapes and sizes. You want a variety of books, but be sure not to add too many as the shelves should not be full. Remember, you need to save room for other interesting objects such as a kitschy pair of bookends, bric-a-brac and a few framed photos. As with the books, variety is key here, so arrange objects amidst the books in a mix of sizes.

Layer Rugs

Fashion and home decor intersect in many ways, and layering is one thing the two have in common. One unexpected way to do this in your home is by layering rugs over your floor covering. Rugs are placemakers, creating a focal point while also adding a cozy element to even the sleekest, most modern spaces. A winning combination is a solid-colored rug in a neutral hue under a smaller rug in a bold print like a Turkish kilim rug.

Get Rid of Clutter

You may already have some enviable decor elements, but they’re not able to shine under that layer of discarded junk mail and months of old magazines. This does not mean hide it all in a pretty decorative box, but actually get rid of all of the junk that is cluttering your space. Whether you toss it in the trash, donate it to charity or give items to friends and family, make it a goal to get rid of anything that isn’t serving a purpose in your life. You’ll be surprised how freeing it feels to part with the unnecessary things you’ve been hanging onto.
